Odisha lawyers to protest against CJI impeachment on April 2

Bhubaneswar: All Odisha Lawyers’ Association will resort to cease-work on April 2 over impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Dipak Misra.

The association strongly condemned the opposition parties at Centre for a proposal to initiate impeachment motion against Justice Misra and destabilising the judiciary system.

“We urge the lawyers of all the bar associations in the state to cease work on April 2 to save the judiciary,” said All Odisha Lawyers’ Association president Gyana Ranjan Mohanty here on Friday.

The association appealed to the lawyers to protest against the move by observing the day as ‘save the judiciary day’.

The association members termed impeachment against CJI as a politically motivated initiative to destroy the judiciary system in the country.

Meanwhile, Odisha’s ruling party BJD rejected the messages circulated on social media against CJI Misra.

The party termed the move by the Congress backed opposition parties to bring impeachment motion in Rajya Sabha against CJI as ‘shallow’ and ‘divisive politics’.

“The BJD has highest regard for CJI Misra. The messages being posted on the social media are the cheap attempts by the political parties against Justice Misra,” said BJD spokesperson Prashant Nanda.

If required we will take legal action in this regard, he added.

However, Odisha BJP’s spokesperson Sajjan Sharma slammed the BJD alleging that the ruling party’s stance is not clear on impeachment motion against the CJI.
