Parking staff at airport in Odisha capital beat up two brothers

In the second incident of its kind at the airport in the last one month, a 31-year-old Non Resident Indian (NRI) and his brother were allegedly assaulted by some parking staff at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in the Odisha capital on Sunday night.

Digbijay Behera, a Marine Engineer by profession working in Europe and his brother Bijay Behera (29) were reportedly attacked by eight personnel of airport parking lot.

Bijay had gone on his Pulsar bike to the airport to receive his brother, who arrived today on an Indigo flight from Mumbai.

As the brothers reached the exit of the parking lot, the staff on duty asked them to pay the parking fees.

Bijay reportedly refused to pay arguing that he was not issued a ticket when he entered through the main gate of the parking. “When we reached the exit gate, they asked to pay the parking fee but we had already reached before time,” he said.

This led to an altercation between the two brothers and the parking staff during which the latter allegedly assaulted them and attacked them with the ticket billing machine which they hold on their hands.

Later the brothers, who had received minor injuries, were rescued by the police. They were taken to Capital hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, a case has been registered at the Airfield police station.

“An airport visitor is exempted from paying parking charge only if he comes out of the parking lot within five minutes. However, action will be taken against the staff who attacked them,” RR Sahu, IIC of Airfield Police Station.
