Pre-monsoon showers lash Odisha capital

While four places in Odisha recorded temperature over 40 degree Celsius, pre-monsoon rainfall today came as a much-needed relief for coastal areas in the state.

Pre-monsoon showers lashed the Odisha capital today with the city recording 60 mm of rainfall in the day.

With this, the regional weather office said that pre-monsoon rainfall will continue in the capital city for the next 24 hours and the mercury would dip further after Sunday.

“The conditions are favourable and monsoon is likely to hit Kerala in 3-4 days. We have witnessed rain and thundershowers in the last few days. More rainfall is likely in several parts of the state in the next 24 hours. Today, 60 mm of rainfall was recorded in Bhubaneswar. The weather conditions will continue to be so and the temperature will decrease after Sunday. The South-West monsoon is likely to hit Kerala next week,” Regional MeT office Director Sarat Chandra Sahu said.

Today, Bhawanipatna remained the hottest place with 45 degree Celsius followed by Sonepur (42.7), Bolangir (41) and Titlagarh (40).

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), 96 percent chances are that the rainfall this year would be normal to excess where North-West India will receive 108 percent rainfall of the Long Period Average (LPA) while central India and southern peninsula will receive 113 per cent of LPA.

Similarly, the North-Eastern region is expected to get 94 percent of rainfall which is “below normal”.
