Special team leaves for Kerala to rescue stranded Odia labourers

Bhubaneswar: A four-member team from Odisha today left for flood-hit Kerala to rescue the Odia labourers trapped at various places in the State.

Speaking to media, Labour Minister Sushant Singh today said the team led by Assistant Labour Commissioner will rescue the Odia labourers stranded in Kochi and Trivandrum and make arrangements to bring them back to Odisha safely.

On the other hand, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Bishnupad Sethi said 140 persons from Odisha have been stranded at various places in the state and the Odisha Government is in contact with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) authorities to rescue them.

The State government also sent a 240-member fire services team to carry out rescue operations in flood-ravaged Kerala.

The team along with 75 power boats was airlifted by the Indian Air Force from Biju Patnaik International Airport here. The mission was flagged off by Director General (Fire Services) B.K. Sharma.

“On request of the Centre, the state government is sending a team of fire personnel to Kerala for rescue operations,” Sharma said.

Earlier on Friday, the Odisha Government requested Kerala to provide assistance including food and drinking water to the stranded workers, who hail from Puri, Cuttack and Kandhamal districts.

It may be mentioned here the distressed Odias had made an SOS call requesting the Odisha government to make arrangements for their rescue.
