1190 get degrees at NIT convocation in Odisha’s Steel City

The twelfth convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Odisha’s Steel City was held at the premier institute’s NCC grounds inside the campus here today.

While former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of India Padmashri Dr Srikumar Bannerjee was the chief guest, Padmashri Prof. Manindra Agrawal of IIT, Kanpur, was the guest of honour.

A total of 1190 stduents were awarded degrees at the convocation. While 50 of them were awarded doctorate degrees (Phd), 39 were given M Tech (Research) degrees and 456 M Tech degrees at the convocation. Four alumni of the premier institute were felicitated for their remarkable contributions.

“The rate at which NIT is opening courses in new technologies and new fields, we will be in the world ranking very soon. Twenty six new courses started here have got approval at the national level as well as the international level. We are presently ranked eighth at the national level. Very soon, we will get a world ranking,” said Vasantha Ramaswamy, Chairperson Board of Governors speaking to reporters.

“Post graduate engineering courses have increased, departments have increased, number of Phd students has gone up very high. and hence, there is need for more infrastructure like classrooms, faculty accommodation, hostels and sports fields etc,” said Sunil Kumar Sarangi, Director NIT.
