18 school students injured after pick-up van overturns in Odisha’s Gajapati

Mohana: As many as 18 high school students sustained grievous injuries today evening as a pick-up van carrying them turned turtle at Champa Ghati while negotiating a turning in Odisha’s Gajapati.

Fourteen injured were identified as Aseni Karji, Chakradhar Nayak, Sibaram Raita, Maheswar Pradhan, Sangram Mandal, Suresh Kumar Pradhan, Sumari Mandal, Bhushan Braja Mandal, Pintu Pradhan, Johan Raita, Bikram Dalabehera, Sagar Behera, Tapan Mandal and Abhaya Mandal.

Identities of the remaining four have not been ascertained yet. They are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Chandragiri.

Bikram and Tapan were later shifted to MKCG Hospital in Berhampur as their condition deteriorated.

According to a source, the students of Chheligada government high school had been to a mini stadium in R Udayagiri and were on their way back after attending a sports event in the district. The event has been organised for the last five days. The students won the champion trophy.

Driver of the pick-up van lost control of the ill-fated vehicle and it overturned leading to the mishap, an eyewitness expressed. The driver fled from the spot soon after when the vehicle turned turtle.
