23 deaths reported as heat wave intensifies in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 22:
As sweltering heat and high humidity, accompanied by frequent power cuts made life miserable for people in the state, the Odisha government revealed today that it has received reports of 23 deaths due to sun stroke so far.
Jharsuguda remained the hottest place in Odisha for the second day running with the mercury touching a high of 45.8 degree Celsius, registering a decimal four point rise in the temperature since yesterday.
Five other cities in the state also recorded temperatures aboove 45 degrees. They were Sambalpur (45.3), Hirakud (45.6), Bhawanipatna (45.5), Bolangir (45.1) and Titlagarh (45.7).
Temperature went past 40 degrees in Chandbali (41), Bhubaneswar (40.6), Angul (43.7), Baripada (42.6), Keonjhar (41.6), Sundargarh (43.5), Talcher (44), Phulbani (41.8), Malkangiri (41.6) and Dhenkanal (42.7).
Normal life in the state capital was disrupted as the humidity level went up to 81 percent. Even the normally busy thoroughfares and market places in the cities and towns wore a deserted look before noon as people stayed indoors to escape the intense heat.
In a release this evening, the local Met office said the heat wave will continue in the state for a week till May 30 barring rain and thunder shower at some places in the coastal and interior districts in the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the state government today said it had received reports of 23 deaths caused by sun stroke.
“So far we have received reports of 23 deaths due to sun stroke of which investigation has been completed in only two cases, both of which turned out to have been caused by some other reasons. The rest of the cases are under investigation by the district collectors,” said Deputy Special Relief Commissioner (DSRC)PravatRanjanMohapatra.
