9-year old girl raped near Paradip Port in Odisha, culprit nabbed

Paradip, Aug 2:

A 42-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly raping a 9-year-old school girl in Sukhuakhola slum settlement in the close vicinity of Odisha’s Paradip Port Township.

The offender, who committed the crime after luring the unsuspecting victim with chocolates, was later remanded to jail custody, the Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police, Satyabrata Bhoi said.

The accused Pratap Jena, a betel leaf trader, had acquaintance with the girl. He induced the girl by offering chocolates and dragged her to a desolate spot in the locality where he raped the child.

The victim, a 4th standard student of a government-run primary school, was medically examined and the report found signs of sexual assault.

The accused has confessed to the crime, police said.

The incident took place a couple of days ago. The police swung into action to nab the culprit today following a complaint lodged by victim’s parents.

The accused Jena was booked under Indian Penal Code section- 376 (Rape), section-557 (Assault or criminal force in attempt to wrongfully confine a person), section-342 (wrongful confinement), section-506 (criminal intimidation) and sections- 4 and 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act , 2012.

He was later sent to jail after a local court rejected his bail plea.
