Over 90% Excise offenders escape punishment in Odisha

In a shocking revelation, Excise minister Dr Damodar Rout on Wednesday informed the State Assembly that over 90 percent of offenders involved in illegal liquor trade, manage to escape punishment in Odisha.

The minister, while replying to a question posed by BJP member Dilip Ray, said out of 137,906 cases pending till 2009-10, 9055 cases were tried but the offenders were let off in 8741 cases.

In 2009-10, 6469 cases of out a total 1,35,327 cases were tried in which the accused were went scotfree in 5991 cases. In 2010-11, 94.14 percent of the accused in 5268 cases escaped punishment.

The trend, the minister said, continued in 2011-12 as the accused were let off in 6080 cases (88.16%) while the rate of their escape went up to 93.71 percent in 2012-13 and 93.05 in 2013-14.
