Another ‘debt-ridden’ farmer ends life in Odisha

Sundergarh: Yet another farmer in Odisha ended his life today, reportedly distressed by crop loss and debt burden.

The deceased has been identified as Purnachandra Seth, a native of Nialpali village in Sundergarh district.

According to reports, the ‘distressed’ farmer had consumed poison in the morning soon after returning from his paddy field. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died after some hours of treatment.

Purnachandra had raised paddy on eight acres of which five acres were being cultivated on sharecropping basis.

He was forced to take extreme step due to crop loss and mounting debt burden as he had taken money from local money lenders, his family claimed.

Similarly, a young farmer, Goutam Seth, of Sambalpur district has committed suicide on Sunday after his standing crop over 12-acre got damaged due to lack of water.
