Cyclone ‘Mandous’ likely to affect Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh; Check wind, rainfall forecast

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclone around December 8 and affect Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted.

“A Low Pressure Area has formed over south Andaman Sea & neighborhood. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal by 6th December evening. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards, intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm and reach Southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry & adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by 8th December morning,” the IMD said in its bulletin issued this morning.

Rainfall Forecast by IMD: Enhanced rainfall activity likely to commence over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and South coast Andhra Pradesh from 7th December midnight. It is likely to increase with rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and isolated heavy rainfall over south Andhra Pradesh on 8th December.

Wind Forecast by IMD: Squally wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) likely to commence along & off Tamilnadu, Puducherry, south Andhra Pradesh coast and Gulf of Mannar from 8th December morning becoming 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from 8th December evening for subsequent 12 hours and likely reduce to 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph on 9th December.

The system will be named as Cyclone Mandous once it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.
