Dreaded criminal hurt in police encounter in Odisha

A dreaded anti-social was hurt in police encounter at Khallikote in Odisha’s Ganjam district this morning.

The injured anti-social, identified as Akshaya Nayak of Athagarhpatna area under Kabisuryanagar police station, was later admitted to the hospital.

Acting on a tip-off that Akshaya and his gang members were planning a major dacoity in Rambha area, a police team, led by Ganjam SP Narasingh Bhola, were waiting near Nirmalajhara on the outskirts of Khallikote town this morning. Seeing Nayak and his associate coming on a bike, police tried to stop the bike. While Nayak’s associate, who the police suspect as Mitu Das, managed to escape, Akshaya fired two rounds at the police van. As police opened fire, he fell down from the bike after sustaining bullet injuries on his left leg. Police later admitted him to Khallikote hospital.

Police seized two live bullets and a pistol from his possession.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the Nayak and his associate are the members of a criminal gang of Athagarhpatna area under Kabisuryanagar police station limits led by another dreaded gangster Rabi Das.

Nayak was involved in a series of crimes including bomb hurling and loot cases.

Till reports last came in, Ganjam SP Narasingh Bhola and DSP Subash Acharya are monitoring the case.

It may be mentioned that the Ganjam police had busted an inter-state gang of looters and arrested four members of the gang in the district three days ago. Police had seized three Bolero jeeps and four bikes from their possession. On the basis of the interrogation of the arrested gang members, police later came to know about the involvement of Nayak.
