DRIEMS to get university status in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Cuttack-based DRIEMS, the premier technical institution, will be accorded the unitary university status in Odisha.

The state government in this regard has cleared the DRIEMS University, Odisha Act 2022 in Assembly yesterday.

The bill was tabled by State Technical Education Minister Pritiranjan Gharai in the House for a debate.

The DRIEMS University will be a self-financing, multi-disciplinary, non-affiliating unitary university and will not demand any financial grant or assistance from the State government, the minister told the House seeking support from all legislators to clear the legislation.

Participating in the discussion, Congress members Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Santosh Singh Saluja, Opposition Chief Whip Mohan Majhi, BJP member Mukesh Mahaling proposed to send the bill to the select committee for review. However, the members of ruling BJD argued that there is a need for a private university in the state for world class infrastructure and quality education.

The bill was passed unanimously following the debate in the Assembly.

“The DRIEMS University will broaden the horizon and give an impetus to multidisciplinary teaching and research in the field of technical education. Moreover, it will expand the scope for opening different schools to deliver multi and interdisciplinary courses by accelerating its present sectoral focus,” Gharai said in the House.

Besides, two more legislations were cleared in the House to amend the CV Raman Global University, Odisha Act-2019 and Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology University, Odisha Act-2018.

Earlier, these two bills were passed to convert Bhubaneswar-based CV Raman College of Engineering and Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology into university.
