After fight with husband, Odisha woman falls prey to rapists

Two youths have been arrested by Plant site police in Odisha’s Steel City of Rourkela on Tuesday morning for allegedly gang raping a married lady on Sunday night.

The victim is now in Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) and her condition is reported to be stable now. The two accused were forwarded to court this evening.

Sources said one Birsa Munda (50) resides alongwith his wife Sushila Munda (45) at Nayabazar area under Plant site police station in Rourkela. On Sunday night, Birsa Munda and Sushila had quarreled in an inebrieted condition, after which Sushila had left her home at around 8.15 pm.

While she was going towards Bondamunda Road, two youths identified as Raju Mukhi (31) and Japani Munda (26), both residents of Nayabazar area, waylaid and then raped her. When she protested and threatend to tell the police about their misdeed, they also  beat her up leaving her unconcious. The youths then fled from the spot.

When Sushila  Munda did not return home till late night, her family members started searching for her. On Monday morning, they located Sushila lying at the spot unconcious. She was rushed to RGH.

Sushila’s husband Birsa Munda lodged an FIR at the Plant site police station mentioning she had been beaten by leaving her unconcious. Police registered a case under IPC section 307 and started investigating.

When Sushila regained conciousness at the RGH on Tuesday morning, Plant site police went to the hospital to record her statement. She narrated to the police the entire sequence of events on Sunday night.

Plant site police have registered a case under IPC section 376 and arrested both Raju Mukhi and Japani Munda. After conducting medical examination, they were forwarded to the court on Tuesday evening.

“Both accused have been arrested under IPC section 307 & 376. They have been forwarded to court on Tuesday evening,” said D Rout, Sub Inspector, Plant Site Police station, Rourkela.
