Five dreaded criminals arrested in Odisha capital

The Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police today arrested five dreaded criminals while they were planning to commit dacoity at Kalinganagar area under Khandagiri police limits in the Odisha capital.

A 7.65 mm Mouser, a magazine loaded with four live ammunition, an air pistol and ammunitions, two katuris, four mobile phones and one motor cycle to be used in the crime were seized from them.

The accused were identified as Gourisankar Swain (25) of Mudulipali village of Bhanjanagar area in Ganjam district, Jaganath Bisoi (22) alias Jaga of Bhanjanagar area, Seta Swain (32) of Kandarsingh under Buguda police station, Biswanath Pradhan (25) of Jhankadapada in Kandhamal district and Papu Mohanty (29) alias Narana of Polasara village of Ganjam, all at present staying at Unit-V basti in the city.

Khandagiri police have registered a case and slapped charges under section 399, 402 of IPC and 25 Arms Act against the accused.

Briefing newsmen here today, twin city Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr R P Sharma said on receiving reliable information about the dacoity, QAT inspector Akash Rana, along with Khandagiri police staff conducted a raid at a solitary place on the backside of the DAV school in K-8 area in Kalinganagar under Khandagiri police limits at about 2 am. The team apprehended these dreaded criminals, who had earlier been booked in several henious crimes, inclouding smuggling of fire-arms and ammunition.

Their criminal antecedents are under verification, the Commissioner said. The accused will be forwarded to a local court here today, he added.

While Gourisankar has more than three dacoity cases in Ganjam district and is wanted in some other cases, Jagannath was inside jail earlier in some crimes. His brother too was a hard core antisocial who died two years back. Seta was also in jail in some crimes committed in Ganjam district. Biswanath was earlier booked in 21 property offence cases of Jatani and Khurda area and was released recently after remaining in jail for about two years. Papu has spent up in jail in some cases of Bhubaneswar and Ganjam, the Commissioner said.
