Four brothers of a family murdered for opposing eve-teasing: Ganjam Police

Berhampur: Eve-teasing was the prime reason behind the murder of four brothers at Pitala Chhak in Ganjam district on March 22 night, informed Brijesh Kumar Rai, Superintendent of Police today.

Rai further stated Sambhu Swain, who was among the deceased, had been running a fast-food stall near Pitala Chhak. At around 10 PM on March 22, a couple was standing near Sambhu’s fast-food stall. In the meantime, Sadhu alias Amiya Swain, who was also nearby, passed lewd comments about the couple.

Sambhu and his brother cautioned Amiya against passing lewd comments further. This led to an argument between them. Amiya left the spot and within minutes he returned accompanied by five associates.

Amiya and his associates started thrashing Sambhu and his brother with wood plank and iron rods before the victims could comprehend anything. Two other brothers of Sambhu came to his rescue, but the attackers thrashed them as well.

While two brothers died on the spot, two victims succumbed to injuries during treatment. The deceased were identified as Sambhu Swain aged 25, Pandura Swain aged 23, Raja Swain aged 28 and Chandan Swain aged 19. They hailed from Kirtipur village of Narendrapur Panchayat.

The Ganjam SP further informed that five persons have been arrested so far and one more accused is still at large. The accused will be taken to the spot and crime scene recreation will be done, the SP added.
