Here’s why BJD decided to support NDA nominee in RS Dy chairperson poll

Bhubaneswar: A day after Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) decided to support NDA candidate from Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United, Harivansh Narayan Singh in the election to the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, the party today stated a reason of doing so.

In a statement, the BJD said it has decided to support JD(U) since BJD and JD(U) have similar ideological origins emerging from the Jayaprakash Narayan movement.

The conch party also said the Congress candidate BK Hariprasad was the AICC in-charge of Odisha and vitriolic in his statements against the BJD.

The party waited till end for consensus over the constitutional post but it did not happen as two different candidates emerged, the statement said.

Worth mentioning, Odisha Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik yesterday announced that his party will support Harivansh Narayan Singh in the poll.

He confirmed that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah a few days earlier regarding the election.

Notably, the BJD has nine MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
