Injured leopard dies at vet hospital in Odisha capital

The injured leopard, which was rescued from Nakchi PWD guest house in Angul district, died at the Veterinary College of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) here today while undergoing treatment.

The leopard underwent treatment at the premier veterinary institute from Tuesday. The following day, the big cat was shifted to Nandankanan Zoological Park here on the outskirts of the city.

However, the leopard was again rushed to Veterinary College as his condition deteriorated. The leopard died this morning despite the best efforts of the vets to save his life.

The body was sent for post mortem to ascertain the reason of death of the leopard.

On Tuesday, the doctors conducted X-ray on the injured leopard whose ambulation was restricted. The tests revealed that the animal sustained injuries in the spinal cord following which it suffered paralysis.

The leopard was treated under the guidance of Prof Dr Indramani Nath.

The four-year-old leopard was rescued by the locals in a bush on the premises of the guest house in a critical condition.

After the forest officials arrived at the spot, the injured leopard was tranquilised and shifted to nearby Handappa forest range office where the leopard was treated by local veterinary doctors.

The injured big cat was shifted to Nandankanan Zoological Park on the outskirts of the capital city on Monday night.
