JEE (Main) final ranks announced, Odisha students relieved

Ending the long and anxious wait by the students in Odisha, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today declared the final ranks of students of JEE(mains).
The students who appeared in the JEE can check their ranks by logging in to www.jeemain.nic.in and www.cbseresults.nic.in.
The counselling for engineering seats conducted by Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) in the State had got delayed in the absence of the final ranks.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducted the national level test for prospective engineering students, extended the deadline for Std XII marks’ confirmation from June 27 to 30, leading to the delay in the announcement of rankings.
After the publication of JEE Main results, the students can register their names online to sit for OJEE counselling which will begin from July 12 along with document verification, the official said.
Nearly 12.7 lakh students had appeared for the JEE(mains) exam seeking admission to different National Institutes of Technology(NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology(IIITs) and other centrally funded institutes.
The rank list of JEE Main 2014 will help candidates to know their All India Rank based on the combination of their JEE Main 2014 scores (60% weightage) and class 12th scores (40% weightage).
The result, however, left a large number of students frustrated and angry because of the ‘skewed’ normalization formula adopted for ranking. Those who scored over 95% in boards were however placed at an advantage.
Last year several petitions challenging the normalization formula used by JEE (main) for ranking students were filed in the Supreme Court and High Courts.
“The normalization formula is skewed. This is a totally absurd way of giving ranks. There should ideally be a normal distribution of marks. The two exams, JEE (mains) and the board exams should not have been coupled. The formula is too complex that needs to be reviewed,’ said an IIT professor.
According to sources, in this method of normalization a student with a high score in JEE(main) and around 90% in board can get a rank much lower than someone who scored less in JEE(main) but had a higher board percentage.
Last year it was decided that for admission to NITs to use the JEE (Main) performance and the normalized Board performance in the 60:40 ratio. But after the JEE (Main) results were out, the JEE Interface Group came up with the complicated normalization formula which put many students at a disadvantage.
The paper-pencil based JEE-Main 2014 was conducted on April 6, and was followed by online testing on 9th, 11th, 12thand 19th in the month of April. Over 13 lakh students took the test out of which 1.5 lakh candidates qualified for JEE Advanced 2014 with top five states this year for JEE Advanced 2014 being Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Bihar.
The JEE Main 2014 Ranks will be accepted by 30 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 13 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITS, IIITM & IIITDM) and 16 other Central /State Government Funded Technical Institutes for providing admissions to successful candidates in various undergraduate engineering programmes.
Formula is correct and it is a good move by the government to put an end to coaching factories?
So you think that a student scoring 96% in boards and and a mere 75 marks in JEE-Main is bettter than a student who got 210 marks in JEE and 65% in boards? If yes, then you are the most retared person in the world.
Short example showing the blunder:
A student scoring 92% in CBSE Boards (getting 96.5%ile will get 0.4*80 = 32 marks out of 144)
A student scoring 96% in CBSE Boards (getting 99.6%ile will get around 0.4*300 = 120 marks out of 144)
A mere difference of 20 marks in boards (which should have ideally contributed 0.4*20 = 8 marks difference in final ranking) gets amplified by a factor of 1100% (120-32 = 88), and thousands of students will lose out in the new system.
Even a rattu can get good marks in Class XII exam but in JEE-Main he can’t because JEE-Main tests the concept understood by the student. So this formula is biased towards those who got good marks in boards. Enjoy, students who are not found deserving to take admission in NITs are now getting admission in NITs. And you say about coaching factories? See JEE-Advanced nearly top 200 are from these coaching factories! These factories will never gonna end as long as our bad education system remains!
