A herd of around 80 elephants that strayed from the Dalma sanctuary in neighbouring Jharkhand into Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district and were seen roaming around the Asanabani forests under Betanoti forest range appear to be heading towards the Kuldiha sanctuary in Baleswar district, forest officials said.

According to DFO Baripada Sanjay Swain, specially trained personnel of the department are facilitating smooth movement of a large herd of elephants that entered the forests in Mayurbhanj district on Monday.

The 80-member herd, which includes six tuskers, reached Suliapada forests on Monday from Dalma sanctuary in Jharkhand through West Bengal, Swain said.

The herd is believed to have taken the elephant corridor linking Dalma Sanctuary and Odisha forests through West Bengal forests, he said.

Swain said the herd had not harmed anybody but had caused damage to standing crops.
