Nayapalli police sources said Bighnaraj Nayak of Jajpur called Manoranjan Nayak, a builder by profession, on his phone on March 14 and demanded Rs 10 lakh from him.

“During the conversation, Bighnaraj said to the builder that he was an SI posted at Khandagiri police station,” police said.

Bighnaraj threatened Manoranjan of dire consequences if he told the matter to anyone, police added.

Manoranjan who stays under Nayapalli police limits then went to the Khandagiri police station to inquire about the matter. He then found out that no such SI was posted over there.

Thereafter the Nayapalli police traced the phone of Bighnaraj and apprehended him.

A case has been registered and Bighnaraj was produced in a local court here today.
