Manipur police arrives in Odisha capital to probe youth’s death

A special team of Manipur Police today arrived in Odisha capital to probe the death of a youth from the north eastern state who was found hanging from a tree in the official quarters of an OAS officer here on December 2.

The three-member team led by SDPO of Imphal West district A Ghanashyam Sharma met the officials of Commissionerate Police.

The senior official of the Manipur police accompanied by a lawyer and the family members of the deceased met Twin City Commissioner RP Sharma at the Commissionerate police headquarters here.

“We told the Commissioner that we are not satisfied with the post-mortem done on December 2. The Commissioner has agreed to go for second round of post-mortem with a panel of doctors and experts in this field in the presence of magistrate and family members,” a top official of the Manipur police said after meeting Twin City Commissioner here.

The top officials would re-investigate into the matter and find out under what circumstances the youth died.

“The elder brother of the deceased and some officials have come from Manipur. They are demanding a high-level inquiry as they suspect that there is possibility of some foul play. They have filed an FIR and we have registered a murder case with the Capital police station. The post-mortem report said that the death was caused due to hanging and the ligature mark on the body was anti-mortem in nature. They are demanding to once again conduct post-mortem on the body. As the body has been preserved in the mortuary, we would request the Forensic Department of the SCB Medical College and Hospital to conduct the autopsy in the presence of a magistrate which would be videographed,” Twin City Commissioner RP Sharma said.

For free and fair investigation into the matter, a police officer of the rank of Additional DCP has been entrusted with the supervision and probe into the case. They have been asked to make available the inquiry report within three days, he added.

The deceased Manipuri Youth—L Poumai– was a native of Khabung Karong village in Senapati district in Manipur. He was found hanging from a tree in the campus of the official quarters of OAS officer Arunanchal Dash in the Unit VI area on December 2.

“My brother has been murdered, he has not committed suicide,” Poumai’s brother said.

While the post-mortem report had indicated towards a case of suicide, the family members of Puomai alleged murder.

On Monday, the brother of the deceased and his relatives reached here and visited the mortuary at the Capital Hospital. The family members accompanied by a photographer examined the body and recorded the entire process on camera after speaking to the police.

According to his brother who had arrived from Bengaluru, Poumai was on his way from Manipur to meet him at Bengaluru. He claimed of Poumai having told him over the mobile phone that some people in the train had threatened him somewhere near Vizag. He added that after the incident his brother’s phone was switched off raising doubts in their minds.
