New regulations for private colleges in Odisha soon: Minister

Concerned over the poor performance of the students in large number of private colleges in the state, the Odisha government has decided to formulate a new policy soon to regulate the functioning of these colleges.

pradeep-panigrahi“There are hundreds of private colleges in the state where appointments of teachers and staff are being made by the management bodies and that has had negative effect on the teaching quality as well as administration. The condition of the private residential colleges is even worse. In view of this, the Higher Education department is considering intervention into the management of these colleges with the formulation of a new policy that would decide the benchmark for appointment of teachers,” Higher Education minister Pradip Kumar Panigrahi told OST on Saturday after the declaration of the annual Plus Two examination results.

Stating that there are allegations against some government and private colleges that are not going by the academic calendar of the government, he said henceforth the department would take stern action against the authorities of these erring college if such instances are brought to its notice.

“The department would come up with a notification to this effect within a week,” he added.

The minister also said there would be no further vacancy in the posts of principals in any government or private college from this academic session.

Henceforth, both the principal and the teaching staff of the college would be held responsible for the poor results, he said.

Panigrahi also informed that a decision has been taken to effect some changes in the existing syllabus while a new pattern of evaluation would be introduced for the examinations to be held in 2014-15.
