NIT, Rourkela to set up 1 MW solar power plant in campus

In a move to promote green technology and to achieve self reliance in meeting its power requirement, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela will set up a 1 megawatt solar power plant in its own campus.

RK Sinha, secretary, public relations, NIT Rourkela, in a press release, said that the solar power plant will provide approximately half the power requirement of the institute. In case of power failure during working hours, normal activities such as classes, laboratories, library, central computer centre, health centre and other offices can continue to function with power supply from the solar plant, he said.

Prof. Sunil Kumar Sarangi, director of the institute, along with a team of faculty members and experts of the institute, recently visited a solar power plant in Bamra being run by a private industry. A group of the institute’s faculty members is working in the area of technology for renewable source of energy.

The move has the mandate of the central government considering the importance of the solar power project from the point of view of environment, esolar power plantcology and pollution. A proposal has already been sent to the government for its approval to complete the formalities for setting up of the solar power plant, the release said adding the premier institute consumes approximately 2 megawatts of power for the entire campus at present.
