Odisha bans paan, tobacco inside Puri Jagannath temple

Puri: In a praiseworthy development, the Odisha government has banned paan, gutkha and tobacco inside the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, an official informed today.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), the governing body of the Jagannath Temple, in a meeting has decided to impose the ban on these products with effect from August 1, said SJTA Chief P K Mohapatra.

“The violation of rule would attract a penalty of up to Rs 500,” Mohapatra said, adding, the new rule applies for both – devotees and servitors.

He also thanked all servitors for their cooperation with the administration for peaceful and smooth conduct of Rath Yatra.

Besides, the SJTA Chief also thanked the Delhi-based businessman and philanthropist K K Sharma for decorating the temple with flowers free of cost during the Rath Yatra festival this year.
