Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik mourns ‘supercop’ Gill’s demise

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condemned the demise of ‘supercop’ K.P.S. Gill, who was hailed for his role in stamping out militancy in Punjab in the 1990s.

In his condolence message, Prime Minister tweeted: “K.P.S. Gill will be remembered for his services to our nation in policing and security. Pained by his demise. My condolences.”

Kanwar Pal Singh Gill, 82, died around 2:55 p.m. on Friday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here, where he was admitted on May 18. He was suffering from terminal kidney failure and ischaemic heart condition.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Gill always inspired others by leading from the front.

“Saddened to learn of Gill’s demise. Known for his bravery and courage, he always inspired others by leading from the front. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May God give them strength to bear this loss,” the Minister tweeted.

Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh also condoled the former Indian Police Service officer’s death.

“My deepest condolences on the passing away of K.P.S. Gill ji. He was an iconic IPS officer who served the nation with honour and pride,” Shah tweeted.

The Congress chief expressed grief, saying he will be remembered for his steadfast fight against terrorism and restoration of peace and normalcy in Punjab.

“Sad loss. K.P.S. Gill’s contribution in fighting terrorism and restoring peace to Punjab cannot be forgotten. My prayers with the bereaved family,” Amrinder Singh tweeted.

Raman Singh tweeted: “Deeply saddened by the passing away of K.P.S. Gill, former DGP of Punjab. May the departed soul rest in peace.”

“We deeply mourn the sad demise of the iconic IPS officer, the legendary K.P.S. Gill. His work in defeating Punjab militancy will always inspire us,” the IPS Association tweeted. (With IANS inputs)
