Odisha court convicts man for attempted murder

Jajpur, May 20:

A local court in Odisha today convicted a person to five years rigorous imprisonment for attempt to murder of a trade union leader here in 2010.

The Assistant Sessions Judge court in Jajpur Road today sentenced Sanjay Kumar Nayak alias Papu to five years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5, 000.

Notably, the trade union leader Samrat Gupta was a close aide of former Finance Minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadai.

It may be mentioned that Gupta was shot at by a motorcycle-borne assailant from a close range at Kaliapani while he was returning with his supporters after attending a meeting.

Gupta had sustained grievous injuries in his neck and was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

A case was registered at Kaliapani police station and Nayak was arrested under section 307, 326 and Sec 25 of the Arms Act.

In protest against the bid on Gupta’s life, his supporters staged road blockades at Sukinda, Mangalpur and in Kaliapani areas.
