Odisha govt official gets 5 yrs’ jail for misappropriation of funds

Phulbani: The Special Vigilance Court, Phulbani today sentenced a former Area Manager of MARKFED to five years’ in jail for misappropriating government funds.

Special Vigilance Judge, Phulbani Biranchi Narayan Mishra pronounced the sentence after convicting MARKFED’s former Area Manager of Boudh Bhubanmohan Das for embezzling government money.

In addition to the jail term, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on Das.

In the event of non-payment of fine, Das has to undergo additional imprisonment of one and a half month, the court clarified in its verdict.

According to sources, in 2004 while Das was the Area Manager of MARKFED at Boudh there were allegations of misappropriation of government money. During the audit, it was detected that Das had misappropriated an amount of Rs 10, 84,194.

Vigilance DSP Prasant Kumar Dwivedi after thoroughly investigating the matter had submitted a report to Vigilance SP, Berhampur following which a case was registered against Das.
