Bhubaneswar, Sep 9:

A team from the Odisha government’s department of Employment & Technical Education & Training (E&TE&T) will soon visit Ganjam district to assess the locations for both the permanent and temporary campuses of the proposed Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) to be set up near Brahmapur.

The decision to send the team for assessment of the locations was taken at a high-level meeting over commissioning of IISER held at the state secretariat here on Tuesday.

The meeting chaired by development commissioner UN Behera proposed Palur Hills and Lauding as possible sites for establishment of the permanent campus of the proposed IISER and UCP Engineering School as the site for the temporary campus.

The state government, after evaluating the sites as per Central guidelines, will then send the report to the Central government for its perusal.

The meeting chaired by the development commissioner UN Behera was attended by the secretary of E&TE&T department, IDCO officials, Revenue department officials and the district collector Ganjam among others.

The state government had announced on August 1 that the proposed IISER would be set up near Brahmapur in Ganjam district.

The IISER is a premier science education and research institute in India, which has been declared as “institutions of national importance” by an Act.

In February, presenting this year’s budget in Parliament, Union finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced that two IISERs would be established in Odisha and Nagaland. Once commissioned, Odisha will join the select group of states with the elite institute. IISERs have already been set up in Bhopal, Calcutta, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvanthapuram and Tirupati.

The fully residential institute will carry out research in frontier areas of science and provide science education at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
