Odisha’s per capita income fourth from bottom in India

The development story hawked by the Odisha government ad nauseam is nothing but a huge hoax, if the economic survey report 2014-15 tabled in the assembly today is anything to go by. The state stands fourth from bottom in per capita income in all India rankings.

The per capita income of the state in 2014-15 stood at Rs 28, 384 against the national average of 39,904, which indicates a huge difference in the standards of living in the state compared to the national level.  The three other states that trail Odisha are Assam, UP and Bihar respectively.

As per the report, Jharsuguda leads the district wise per capita income chart while Nabarangpur is at the bottom.

The GDP growth of the state in 2014-15 stood at 8.78%, which marks a decent growth from previous year. In 2013-14 it was at 2.21%.

As per the report, the largest contributor to Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of the state this year is the service sector, which stands much ahead of the agriculture sector.  While the share of agriculture sector in the GSDP stands at 15.4%, the contribution of the service sector stands at 51.2% and the share of industry sector at 33.4%.

The highest contributor to GSDP is Sundargarh district and the lowest contribution comes from Deogarh.

Per capita income, also known as income per person, is the mean income of the people in an economic unit such as a country or city. It is calculated by taking a measure of all sources of income in the aggregate (such as GDP or Gross national income) and dividing it by the total population.

GSDP is defined as a measure, in monetary terms, of the volume of all goods and services produced within the boundaries of the State during a given period of time, accounted without duplication.
