Odisha police to take Abdur Rehman on remand

Special Task Force of Crime Branch of Odisha police would take suspected al-Qaeda operative Mohd Abdur Rehman on remand for further interrogation.

Police had moved Salepur Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court seeking 14-day remand of Abdur Rehman which was granted by the court.

Meanwhile, the investigating agency has sent documents pertaining to the case at Tis Hazari court in New Delhi.

Presently, Rehman is in the remand of Jharkhand police.

It may be recalled that Delhi police and Commissionerate Police had arrested the 37-year-old Mohd Abdur Rehman from his house in the wee hours on December 16 following a joint operation. He was picked up from his house in Satabatia village in Paschimakachha area under Jagatpur police limits in the district.

He was booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Rehman, who ran a madrasa at Tangi area near Cuttack, is suspected to have international links in countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Dubai.

Notably, the Odisha police had said that Rehman had links with a man involved in a failed car bomb attack at the Glasgow international airport in 2007.

Further, it is alleged that he is a member of al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and was radicalising youth for terror activities.
