Odisha woman is all smiles after removal of 10-kg tumour

A woman from Odisha’s Gajapati district has lost almost one-fourth of her body weight post surgical removal of a 10-kg tumour from her abdomen.

The 32-year-old woman, Anandini, from Tandiguda Indira Awas Colony had been bearing the 17-year-old huge abdominal mass till recently.

While registering under a government-sponsored scheme for pregnant mothers in 2007, she was told that she is suffering from gastrointestinal disease.

A worried Anandini along with her brother consulted the then Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Anitarani Patnaik regarding the abnormal condition. She got her admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur.

After investigations, the doctors detected a 10-kg tumour in Anandini’s abdomen which needed immediate removal.

Unable to arrange funds required for the surgery and other expenses, the patient returned to her village hoping to accumulate the amount and get rid of the abnormal growth. However, she failed to pile up necessary sum.

A report titled ‘Anandini Ra Saha Heba kiye?’ was published in Sambad’ on June 23. The report carried the woes of the woman deserted by her husband nine years ago and was unable to treat the tumour due to financial crisis. Following the report, financial help pour in with which she managed to get rid of the abnormal growth in her abdomen.

On June 29, she knocked on the doors of District Collector’s grievance cell. R Udaygiri Collector Mansi Nimbhal heard the grievances of Anandini and directed the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) to take necessary steps for removal of the tumour.

Anandini underwent surgery for the removal of the tumour recently. However, the details of the histopathology report to determine whether the tumour was malignant (cancerous) was unavailable.

For years, she had problems in mobility and difficulty in doing her daily chores due to abdominal pain and discomfort. With the excision of the abdominal mass, she is relieved and smile is back on her face.
