Odisha woman loses over Rs 90,000 after ordering cake online

Sambalpur: A woman became a victim of cybercrime after ordering a cake online as the scammers stole over Rs 90,000 from her bank account.

The incident was reported from Mudipada area in Sambalpur district of Odisha.

According to reports, Diptimayee Pradhan ordered a cake at 1.00 pm on Thursday on online food delivery platform Zomato. However, the cake arrived at her residence instead of reaching the destination that she had mentioned in the order. Therefore, she requested the delivery boy to cancel the order and refund Rs 569. The delivery boy asked her to contact customer care in this regard.

She dialed a number after searching for the customer care number on Google. A person, who reportedly received the call, sent her a link on her WhatsApp and asked her to check her balance on PhonePe after clicking the link. Then he asked her to download a screen-sharing App ‘AnyDesk’. He asked her to share her UPI ID and other banking details. After she gave all the information related to her bank account, a total amount of Rs 94,383 was deducted.

The victim lodged a written complaint with the Sambalpur police after learning that she was duped by the cyber frauds. Police registered a case and investigation is underway in this matter.
