The accident, touted to be the deadliest in the last two decades, has claimed at least 275 lives and left over 1,000 injured.

While the cause of the crash is still not clear, the accident involved collision of three trains – the Coromandel Express, the Bengaluru-Howrah Super Fast Express and a stationary goods train near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district of the state.
