Road mishap deaths in Odisha higher than national average: Minister

Bhubaneswar: Road accident deaths in Odisha in 2020 is much ahead that of the national average. At the State-Level Road Safety Council meeting, Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera informed out of 100 deaths in Odisha, 48 died due to road accidents as compared to deaths of 36 people across the country.

Behera added 4,738 deaths due to road accidents were reported in 2020 in the State. Of them, 80% accident victim did not wear helmets.

The data provided by the Minister also mentioned a total of 532 accident-related cases have been registered at 22 police stations under the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District till November 30, 2021. Deaths due to road accidents in the city were 149 whereas a total of 304 people were injured.

The Bhubaneswar UPD reported 517 accident-related cases in 2020 in which 162 people lost their lives.
Maximum 62 road accident cases were registered under Capital Police limits in the city followed by 53 cases in Khandagiri area and 50 under Saheed Nagar police station area.

A total of 21 persons lost their lives under Balianta police station area in road accidents.

The Commissionerate Police collected Rs 3.04 crore fine from 1,92,943 vehicle drivers for traffic violation in the city till November 30, 2021.

Rs 62,79,100 fine were collected from 21,110 people for OUP Act violations.
