Roadside vendors removed from Unit-II Market Building area

OST Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Sep 12:

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities on Wednesday removed illegal encroachments from the Market Building area at Unit-11 here.

Two platoons of armed police were deployed to prevent any untoward situation.

The Corporation took up the eviction drive in the wake of an indefinite strike by the permanent traders of the Market Building area.

According to BMC Assistant Commissioner K P Pati, more than 400 street vendors were removed. He, however, said that the Corporation would rehabilitate the roadside vendors very soon after identifying suitable locations for them.

He also said that over 240 street vendors, who produced stay orders issued by the High Court opposing their displacement, will be allowed to do business inside the market premises without a permanent space.

Expressing resentment over the rude behavior of the street vendors, secretary of Capital Market Association (CMA) Pradyumna Jena said there were many instances of street vendors misbehaving with female customers.
