Sex videos: Odisha Crime Branch registers five cases suo motu

After the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two persons in the VSS Nagar MMS scandal for allegedly circulating sex videos on social media platforms, the Crime Branch of Odisha police have registered at least five cases recently taking suo motu cognisance of such cases being reported from various places in the state.

Cases of sex videos circulating through mobile phones and other social media platforms have come to the notice of the Crime Branch in at least five cities in Odisha. Taking suo motu cognisance of the cases, the sleuths have registered cases against unnamed persons.

“Police have been instructed to take suo motu cognisance and register cases if such incidents come to their notice in any part of the state and initiate probe into it. The Crime Branch would provide all necessary technical support in the investigation,” Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma said.

Five cases have been registered across Odisha of which one has been registered in Baleswar and two each in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar, Sharma informed.

Meanwhile, the Baleswar sex MMS videos on mobile phones have created a panic in the coastal town. As per media reports, at least three sleaze videos have been circulating in the area for quite some time.

“We haven’t received any complaint yet. But, we have registered a case from our side. However, investigation reveals that some college students have uploaded the act of consensual sex on the internet. Stringent action will be taken against the offenders as per the provisions of law,” IG (eastern range) Asit Panigrahi said.

Social activists, intellectuals and denizens of the city have demanded prompt action by the police to apprehend those behind the crime.

Similar incidents have been reported from other cities and police have begun investigation into the incidents.
