Sigh of relief as low pressure over Bay of Bengal not likely to turn cyclone

Bhubaneswar: Though some weather models had earlier indicated that the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal may turn into a cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said the chances of intensification of the system is low.

“Based on today’s analysis, the possibility of further intensification of the system appears to be low, mainly owing to the enhanced likelihood of formation of another low pressure area over east-central Arabian Sea off south Maharashtra coast during next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its bulletin issued at 12.45 PM.

“Yesterday’s Low Pressure Area over central parts of Andaman Sea moved slightly westnorthwestwards and lay over North Andaman Sea & neighbourhood at 0530 hrs IST of today the 15th November 2021. It persisted over the same region at 0830 hrs IST. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and become well marked over east-central & adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal during next 48 hours. Thereafter it is likely to move nearly westwards and reach west central & adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh – north Tamil Nadu coasts on 18th November 2021,” the bulletin said.

A Low Pressure Area is likely to form over east-central Arabian Sea off south Maharashtra coast during next 24 hours. It is likely to move west-northwestwards & become more marked during the subsequent 48 hours, it added.
