Sum hospital organizes NBI workshop in Odisha for early detection of cancer

A two-day intensive workshop providing hands-on training on NBI, the first of its kind in eastern India, organized by the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and Sum Hospital, concluded in Odisha’s state capital here on Monday.

Cancer, the dreaded scourge of mankind, can be completely cured if detected early.

The advancement made by technology in recent times has made it possible to take on cancer and Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) is a novel endoscopic procedure which can detect cancer at a very early stage.

The workshop attracted altogether 35 gastroenterologists and endoscopists from different parts of the country who were trained by Dr Naresh Bhatt, head of the department of Gastroenterology at Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore.

Dr Manoj Sahu, Associate Professor in the department of Gastroenterology at IMS and Sum Hospital was the course director.

“The Narrow Band Imaging technology is based on optical phenomenon where the surface mucosa, the cells and the sub-epithelial blood vessels are very clearly delineated. It helps in differentiation between benign and malignant lesions and detection of early cancer,” said Dr Sahu.

“The extent of the cancer, through this procedure, is well identified and the cancer can be taken out completely by endoscopic methods without requirement of any open surgery,” he said, adding more such workshops were being planned by the hospital.
