Two-month-old baby sold for Rs 50,000 in Odisha’s Cuttack city

Cuttack: A two-month-old baby girl was allegedly sold by her parents for Rs 50,000 at Kathajodi Vihar slum in Odisha’s Cuttack city, last evening.

A team of Childline rescued the infant and lodged a complaint at the Markat Nagar police station here. As many as six persons were detained by police in this connection.

According to reports, the Childline had received information that members of a family of Saanta Sahi here came to the slum in a car to buy the baby for Rs 50,000. A team of the Childline immediately rushed to the spot. However, the buyers had left the place by the time the Childline members reached the slum. They chased the car, intercepted the vehicle, and then rescued the baby girl.

However, mother of the baby refuted the allegation of selling her child. “I and my husband have five children including the baby girl. However, we are unable to earn and feed them after sustaining injuries in mishap. We had given our baby girl to the person at whose house I was serving was maid. We have not sold her,” she said.
