Undertrial dies under mysterious circumstances in Odisha capital

An undertrial has died in the Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar, Odisha under mysterious circumstances, today .

The deceased Benudhar Jena was a native of Madhupur village in Khurda district.

Involved in a land quarrel in his village, he was an accused in a murder case and was kept in the Jharpada Jail as an undertrial.

According to sources, Benudhar Jena was feeling unwell and suffering from fever for the last few days. His relatives have alleged that even after they repeatedly appealed to the jailer to send him to Capital Hospital for better treatment he ignored their requests.

Yesterday, after Benudhar’s  health deteriorated he was  administered an injection by the jail pharmacist but Jena  died today.

The undertrial’s death has triggered protests by inmates of the special jail and additional police forces have been called in to control the situation.

Jena’s family has alleged that he was murdered.  The police and senior jail authorities have started an inquiry into the unfortunate incident.
