World Environment Day 2022 Theme, History, Significance

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5. It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and will be hosted by Sweden for this year.

World Environment Day was first celebrated in 1973 by millions of people across the world. Over the years, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach.

Only One Earth” is the campaign for World Environment Day 2022. It was the slogan for the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972. With the focus on ‘Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature,’ it calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.

The Earth is said to be facing a triple planetary emergency which includes the quick heating up of climate, habitat loss and other pressures and pollution that continues to poison air, land and water.

United Nations says that time is running out and nature is in emergency code. The annual greenhouse gas emission has to be halved by 2030. It also suggests to make sustainable living the default option.
