3 youths arrested for vandalising Gandhiji’s statue on Martyr’s Day

On a day when the entire nation was paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 66th death anniversary, three youths from Ichapur village landed in jail for defacing and vandalizing a statue of the Father of the Nation here.
Police arrested three persons – Rashmi Ranjan Das (25), Lituna Behera (27) and Niranjan Sahoo (27) – of Ichapur village for allegedly vandalizing, defacing and setting fire to a bust size statue of the Mahatma, police said police on Thursday.
Kendrapara SP Rabi Narayan Behera said the trio was in an inebriated state when they vandalized Mahatma’s statue late on on Wednesday night.
They were booked under Sections 294, 506 and 34 of IPC and Section 3 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act after angry locals staged a dharna demanding the arrest of the culprits, he said.
The three who were produced before the SDJM court here and sent to jail custody after they were refused bail by the court, Behera added.
