The incident which triggered attack on the police station was that yesterday a woman named Dege Marandi was found hanging from a tree close to Khunta police compound.

The locals alleged that Marandi was gang raped and killed. They were demanding compensation and a scientific probe into the matter.

But the Khunta police have registered an unnatural death case. Angry, the locals went on a berserk and ransacked the police station.

While a woman sub-inspector, OIC and some constables of the police station have been injured in the clash, police have arrested 24 villagers, the sources added.

“The problem was because of report of woman suicide. There was no allegation by her husband or near relatives. Some village leaders have instigated them to do this. We had provided scientific team from district headquarters. The investigation was going on in a scientific manner”, said a senior police officer.

Meanwhile, the investigations are on to ascertain the real reason behind the death of the woman.
