Tusker dies after falling into boar poachers’ trap in Odisha forest

Hindol: A tusker died after falling into an electric trap laid to kill wild boars in Gurilo forest under Balimi plice station limits in Dhenkanal district. The matter came to light today after villagers spotted the elephant carcass in the forest.

After receiving information, Hindol forest range officials reached the spot and seized the carcass and electric trap.

A Forest official said the elephant is believed to be around 15 years old.

As the crop harvesting is on in Hindol area, wild boars mostly venture into farmlands to graze paddy. Local poachers set up electric traps in the forest to catch wild boars coming towards the paddy field. The tusker might have died after coming in contact with one of such traps, the Forest official added.

The elephant will be buried tomorrow after the post mortem.
