Bhubaneswar, Mar 27:

Taking note of the large number seats lying vacant in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT) in the country for the last few years, the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry has decided to conduct common counselling for admission in these leading institutes.

This will give opportunity to the students, who are unable to secure the desired rank, to pursue their higher students in these institutes.

The JEE Main examination is scheduled on April 4 between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Results of the JEE Main paper-1 will be announced on April 27 while 1.5 lakh students will be selected for JEE Advance examination which will be held on May 24. Results of this examination would be published on June 18 after which the common counselling for admission into IITs & NITs will take place.

The final results for JEE Main will be announced on July 27.

Students can go for choice filling and choice locking after the results of JEE Advance examination. The document verification and admission process will follow for all Central government aided institutes including IITs and NITs will follow.

Earlier on Wednesday, the HRD ministry reiterated in Delhi High Court that IIT will do common counselling for IIT and NIT from this year, taking a stand which is in complete contrast with the premier engineering institutes’ view that it will not be possible this academic year.

“As per the outcome of the meetings, it has been decided to have common counselling/joint seat allocation of IITs, NITs, IITs and some other GFTIs (government funded technical institutions) with effect from academic year 2015-2016,” said Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, appearing for HRD ministry.
