Each GP in Odisha to have a high school soon

As part of the effort to make secondary education compulsory in the state, the School and Mass Education department of the Odisha government has decided to open high schools in each panchayat in the state.

The School and Mass Education department has decided to open high schools within a radius of five km from each village.

The department has decided to open new high schools in 46 gram panchayats and start classes IX and X in schools in 41 panchayats  where teaching is currently imparted up to class VIII.

The departmental secretary Usha Padhee said teaching will be imparted in these schools from the current academic session.

The secretary said steps have been taken to provide necessary infrastructure and appoint teachers in these schools. Presently, the state has 9423 high schools in total.

“Some GPs, there are no high schools. In those GPs, we can upgrade existing schools by opening classes IX and X. This way, we can provide high schools to children within five km radius. The entire mapping for the purpose has been completed. The government has decided to open high schools in all gram panchayats which do not have schools within five km radius from 2015-16 academic year,” informed Usha Padhee, secretary School and Mass Education department.
