Former Odisha chief secretary to join Congress tomorrow

The joining of new members into the national party is believed to have been inspired by the encouraging response garnered by the Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra

Bhubaneswar:  Inspired by the success of Bharat Jodo Yatra by the Indian National Congress, former chief secretary of Odisha Bijay Patnaik will be joining the national party at the headquarters of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in New Delhi tomorrow.

The former bureaucrat will be heading for the national capital along with other youth leaders and Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) Sarat Pattanayak where the admission of the new members to the party will take place in presence of Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge.

The 1976 batch Odisha cadre IAS officer, who retired as Chief Secretary of Odisha in 2013 after an eventful 37 years of public service, believed to be making an entry into politics as a BJD MP after retirement. Later, speculations were rife about him joining the Congress but he cleared the air citing that he had no interest in politics.

In 2015, Patnaik had joined the Anil Agarwal Foundation as the President of the Vedanta University Project. However, he quit the Vedanta Group two years later stating that lack of interest from Anil Agarwal Foundation in establishing Vedanta University led to this decision.

Meanwhile, the joining of new members into the national party is believed to have been inspired by the encouraging response garnered by the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra, a mass movement spearheaded by senior leader Rahul Gandhi to unite the country in the face of divisive politics. After the five-month-old foot march which concluded recently in Kashmir, the Congress will embark on the ‘Hath Se Hath Jodo’ campaign which will be launched by general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and organised at village and block levels in the first phase followed by district and state levels.
