Former Odisha Minister Jagannath Mallick passes away

Noted social activist, writer and former Odisha Agriculture & Co-operation Minister Jagannath Mallick today passed away while under treatment in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Mallick was 80. He served as the Agriculture & Co-operation Minister in Nilamani Routray cabinet in 1979.

According to his profile in Biju Janata Dal website, he began his career as a Class II officer under Government of Odisha. He was actively involved with student organisations between 1958 and 1961 and was elected to Odisha Assembly for the first time in 1971 as Utkal Congress candidate and was appointed the government Chief Whip in Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Later, he was elected in 1974 as Pragati Dal candidate and in 1977 as Janata Party candidate from the Jajpur and was made the government Chief Whip and then became Minister of Agriculture & Cooperation in 1979. He was also elected in 1985 and 1990 to Assembly as Janata Party candidate from same constituency.

Later in 1999, he was elected to 13th Lok Sabha and was a member in the Committee on Agriculture between 1999 and 2000.

A noted writer, Mallick penned several books in Odia including Sambit, Kaiverta Kanya, Jarasandha, Man of Epoch, Bhabitavya, Ramayan Darsan, Mahabharat Darsan, Krushnatu Bhagaban Swayam, Pratibad and Matir Murtikar Jhadar Egal.
