Former Odisha MLA Sarat Paikray passes away

Senior BJD leader and former MLA of Jatni Sarat Paikray passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on late Friday night. He was 60.

Born on May 6, 1955 at Khudapur in Khordha district, Paikray was a prominent student leader. He was a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). He was also the students’ union president of KBDAV College, Nirakarpur and general secretary of Anandpur College Students’ Union.

He was arrested under MISA during Emergency in 1975.

Later, he joined politics and won from Jatni Assembly constituency for two terms. He had won seat as a Janata Dal candidate in 1990 and later as a BJD candidate in 2004.

He was the chairman of the Odisha State Housing Board.

He was also the general secretary of Biju Janata Dal and was continuing as a member of the BJD Parliamentary Affairs Committee from 1996 till date.

Family sources said the body of Paikray would be brought to his native village where his last rites would be performed.
